Schools are charged with maintaining a safe, supportive environment which protects the rights and needs of young people at all times. School staff have regular contact with students and young people, and a responsibility to help to identify students in need of additional support or protection.

At John Port Spencer Academy, the safety and welfare of our students is at the heart of our practice. We recognise our safeguarding responsibilities to include:

  • creating a safe environment for children and young people through robust safeguarding practices;
  • ensuring that adults who work in the academy, including volunteers, are able to work with students safely, and are properly trained and equipped to do so;
  • teaching student and young people to stay safe; and
  • maintaining an environment in which young people feel confident to approach any member of staff if they have a worry or problem.

John Port Spencer Academy follows the procedures set out by the Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Board in the Derby and Derbyshire Safeguarding Procedures (www.derbyshirescb.org.uk) and take account of guidance issued by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (in particular Safeguarding Children and Safer Recruitment in Education 2007).

What to do if you have safeguarding concerns

If you have any concerns about the welfare of a young person please talk to any teacher or a member of safeguarding team. See our full team here.

  • Domestic abuse – John Port Spencer Academy supports the ‘Stopping Domestic Abuse Together’ Initiative. This means that we receive direct communication from the police where any young person that attends John Port Spencer Academy is affected. This allows the academy to support that young person.

Out of Hours Safeguarding Advice

While most students look forward to school holidays with enthusiasm, for other young people, time out of school can be a time of increased anxiety. Students who may struggle include those who rely on regular face-to-face contacts with their friends, or otherwise value the security and structure provided by the school day.

Safeguarding concerns can be registered at any time via safeguarding@johnportspencer.com. There are also two other safeguarding support areas for students and parents. One to report any potential bullying concerns (antibullying@johnportspencer.com) and one for any emotional wellbeing concerns or support (emotionalwellbeing@johnportspencer.com).

Tips for keeping safe

We want you to enjoy your free time but we also want you to stay safe. Follow the simple tips below to help you stay safe and feel more confident.

  • Take responsibility for yourself
  • Always tell an adult where you are going and inform them of where you are at all times
  • See something, Say something
  • Don’t mess about near dangerous places such as railway lines, overhead electricity lines or roads
  • Be sensible near water and only go swimming if there is a lifeguard
  • Stay safe online and keep your personal details safe. If in doubt tell an adult
  • Never share any inappropriate images
  • When it is warm, if you are going outside, you should protect yourself against the sun by applying sunscreen, wearing a hat, staying out of the midday sun and drinking plenty of water
  • Always ask for help if you need it.
